An iconic song from the 1980s, “Girls just want to have fun” propelled young Cyndi Lauper among the biggest stars of the decade. First single from his album “She’s so unusual”, this emblematic song was composed by Robert Hazard in 1979, from a solely male point of view. When Cyndi Lauper reads the lyrics of this song, she initially refuses to sing this title with its misogynistic overtones. She then ends up obtaining from her author the right to modify certain words in lyrics. These few changes completely reverse the meaning of the song, which, despite its few sentences, becomes a true feminist anthem.
As well as lyrics. the music for “Girls just want to have fun” is also important. Made with a budget of barely $1,500, the video takes on the air of a soap opera, in which Cyndi Lauper, in conflict with her mom, plays the main character
Well, reading lyrics girls just want to have fun
my mother says when you gonna live your life right
oh mother dear we're not the fortunate ones
and girls they want to have fun
oh girls just want to have fun"
We notably see Cyndi Lauper arm-locking her father, a sort of emblematic figure of patriarchal society and male domination.
my father yells what you gonna do with your life
oh daddy dear you know you're still number one
but girls they want to have fun
oh girls just want to have"
